Information for New Law Students
Welcome to the Law Faculty!
INFORMATION FOR STUDENTS ENROLLED IN LEGAL PROCESS (LAWS1130), CONTRACT I (LAWS1101), TORTS I (LAWS1107) CRIMINAL LAW I (LAWS1105) & PROPERTY I (LAWS2204)
The law units studied by students in their first semester in the Law School are taught in a variety of ways. These units are Legal Process (lectures and weekly seminars), Contract I and Property I(lectures and fortnightly tutorials), Torts I (small groups only) and Criminal Law I (lectures and weekly tutorials). If you are enrolled in any of these units, you need to read the following instructions carefully.
Legal Process, Contract I and Torts I In order that students enrolled in Legal Process may attend a special series of lectures in the first week, there are no classes in the first week of the semester in Legal Process, Contract I or Torts I. However, students who are enrolled in Legal Process MUST attend the special lecture series in lieu of first week classes. (First semester begins Monday 3 March, 2008.)
One of the objectives of the Legal Process unit is for students to acquire the foundational skills and knowledge necessary to make sense of other first year law units. However, some “foundational” topics may not be reached until well after a student needs that skill or knowledge in order to cope with the other units being studied, such as Criminal Law, Contract and Torts. We solve this dilemma by teaching some “survival skills” necessary for law studies in the first week of the semester and delaying the start of classes in most of the other units until the second week of the semester.
These “survival skills” are taught over nine lectures as set out in the timetable. Note that the lectures are for ALL Legal Process students. All lectures will be recorded using the UWA Lectopia System and will be made available from the Legal Process web page http://www.uwa.edu.au/page/103718
Orientation
The Blackstone Society is The University of Western Australia‘s Law Student Society. Blackstone Society representatives, along with the Dean, and other guest speakers, will be presenting the Law Welcome talk on Thursday 28 February at 11am in the Octagon Theatre. We hope to see you there.
Finally, as indicated in the timetable, everyone is invited to meet in the courtyard at 4pm on Wednesday 5 March for the fresher BBQ, when the Dean and Head of School, Professor Bill Ford, will introduce the lecturers who teach first year units.
Criminal Law I and Property I Please note that lectures in Criminal Law I and Property I (which are studied by a few first year students,) begin in the first week of semester.
On-Line Class Registration (OLCR)
http://www.olcr.uwa.edu.au http://www.timetable.uwa.edu.au
You will need to register your preferences online at any computer with Internet access, for allocation to seminars for Legal Process, small group classes for Torts I and tutorials for Criminal Law I, Contract I and Property I. OLCR will open for the first allocation of units on February 18 at noon. Please also enter your preferences for your lectures in addition to your small groups, seminars and tutorials (apart from the Legal Process lectures) as this will assist in the allocation of your timetable and to help avoid clashes.
It is recommended that you work out your preferences before you log on, as you will only have about 20 minutes to indicate your preferences. Timetables showing the group times for each unit can be viewed at: http://www.timetable.uwa.edu.au/Curr/selectunits.asp by selecting the unit code (listed above) as appropriate. Please note the cut-off dates for entering preferences, as set out on the OLCR website. You must register your preferences on-line before the cut-off date, or you will automatically be allocated to a class.
Second round offers: Students who have accepted second round offers or who have enrolled after the first allocation closing date for OLCR, can enter their preferences staright after enrolment; from 25 February 2008. The closing date for entering first round preferences is 28 February at 6am.
Requests to change group allocation If, after the first and second OLCR allocation, you still have a timetable clash, requests to change small group allocation must be directed to the relevant unit coordinator. You will be unable to change small group or tutorial allocations, unless, using the University timetable, you can demonstrate a timetable clash. Requests for changes for other reasons cannot be considered. As from Wednesday 5th March, any requests to change group allocation must be directed to the unit coordinator. The unit coordinators are:
Academic Conduct Essentials (ACE)
All students who have not previously been enrolled at UWA are required to complete a short compulsory online module called Academic Conduct Essentials (ACE) within the first 10 weeks of semester. ACE introduces you to essential knowledge regarding ethical scholarship, helps prepare you for the expectations of your university career and informs you of correct academic conduct.
The unit can be accessed via WebCT (http://webct6.uwa.edu.au). The final unit quiz must be completed with a mark of 80% or greater. You may attempt the quiz as many times as you wish to gain the required pass mark. Completion of the unit will be recorded as an Ungraded Pass (UP) on your academic record. Non-completion (NC) within the required timeframe will also be documented on formal academic records. More information on ACE is available at http://ace.uwa.edu.au

It is essential that you activate your UWA e-mail address. We will communicate important announcements and information to you by e-mail.
The Law School has a range of rules, policies and procedures that apply to all LLB units unless expressly varied by the unit coordinator. They should be read in conjunction with the unit outline. Copies are available from the Law School office, ground floor, Law Link Building. As the rules, policies and procedures are updated from time to time, students should ensure that they consult the latest version: January 2008 edition.
