LAWS3345 Current Issues in Consumer Law and Policy

OutcomesStudents are able to (1) discuss, debate and analyse the history, theory and current practice of consumer law and policy; (2) recognise a range of current issues in consumer law and policy; (3) examine critically current issues in consumer law and policy; and (4) place consumer law and policy in the context of economic and general public policy law and practice both domestically and internationally.
 
ContentThis unit examines a number of the major current issues in consumer law and policy including new laws prohibiting unfair contract terms; the interface of competition and consumer law; the development of industry ombudsman schemes; the role of interest groups in the development of consumer law and policy; and the upcoming national review of Australian consumer protection regulation (including an analysis of red-tape regulation).
 
AssessmentStudents are required to participate in class (10 per cent) and complete a 4000-word research essay (90 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.

For first-year units the Bookshop will endeavour to make available photocopies of book lists for individual units. Books marked with an asterisk (*) are available in paperback.
