LAWS1105 Criminal Law I

OutcomesStudents acquire (1) an understanding of the rules of the substantive criminal law with respect to the definition of core criminal offences under the Criminal Code; principles of criminal responsibility; and the rules relating to the various excuses and defences; (2) an understanding of key elements of criminal procedure and core features of the criminal process; (3) an understanding of the considerations which are taken into account in determining whether conduct should be designated ‘criminal’; and (4) an ability to understand the ethical and social context in which criminal law offences, excuses and defences occur.
 
ContentThis unit introduces basic principles of the criminal process and examines core offences against the criminal law of Western Australia, including homicide, non-fatal offences against the person, sexual offences, and selected property offences. It also considers different forms of ‘participation’ in crime, such as attempted crimes, conspiracy and parties to crime.
 
AssessmentStudents are required to complete an assignment (30 percent) and a final examination (70 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is available for those students who obtain a mark of 45 to 49 inclusive in this unit (see University General Rule 1.2.1.25).
