| Outcomes: Students are able to (1) explain the historic and philosophical background of human rights; (2) apply and analyse the issues that arise from the application of select international human rights norms to given factual circumstances; (3) evaluate the international mechanisms for protection of select international human rights norms; (4) evaluate the domestic mechanisms for protection of human rights norms; (5) apply and analyse the issues that arise from the application of Commonwealth and state anti-discrimination law to given factual circumstances. |

| Content: This unit equips students with the ability to make critical, analytical and reasoned arguments on selected topics in international and domestic human rights law. The topics include introduction to international human rights law; international human rights norms; monitoring implementation and compliance; the relationship between international human rights law and domestic law—general principles; sources of domestic human rights law and anti-discrimination law; key concepts in Commonwealth and state anti-discrimination laws; and evaluation of anti-discrimination laws. |

Assessment: This consists of a mooting exercise (25 percent) and a take-home examination (75 per cent).
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
