LAWS3315 Selected Topics in Public International Law

OutcomesStudents are able to (1) demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of selected advanced and specialised topics of public international law; (2) demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of international legal theory; (3) appreciate the impact of conventional and customary law on states, individuals and corporations; (4) appreciate the inter-connectedness of international law, relations and diplomacy; and (5) consider how public international law can be better respected and enforced.
 
ContentThis unit deals with selected advanced and specialised topics of public international law. It covers the law of the sea, the law of international institutions (focusing mainly on the United Nations), the use of force and self-defence, state succession, international law theory, minority/group rights and international environmental law.
 
AssessmentThis comprises a major research assignment, seminar presentation and regular seminar attendance and participation.

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
