| Outcomes: Students are able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of the common law principles and legislation that govern health care and biomedical research in Australia; (2) demonstrate an understanding of the bioethical, social, political and economic dimensions of medico-legal issues; (3) critically analyse the present construction of the law, and engage in informed, critical debate on alternatives; (4) conduct thorough, comprehensive, and accurate research into medico-legal issues; and (5) write in a clear, logical, organised manner that clearly and accurately conveys the writer's thought, arguments, evidence, reasoning and conclusions. |

| Content: This unit provides an introduction to the legal principles that govern health care and biomedical research as well as bioethical and social literature evaluating the law. Topics may include (1) the patient–health carer relationship including consent, competence, substituted decision making and privacy; (2) issues arising at the beginning and end of life (including reproduction technologies, pregnancy and childbirth, death and dying); (3) misconduct and adverse events in health care including medical negligence and professional regulation; (4) representing health carers and health care consumers; and (5) bodies and body parts including organ donation and the ownership and use of human tissue. |

Assessment: This comprises a research paper and an examination.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
