OutcomesStudents are able to (1) demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of the history and development of public international law; (2) demonstrate a sound knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts, principles and doctrines of public international law; (3) appreciate the increasing impact of conventional and customary law in our daily lives; (4) reflect on how public international law can be better respected and enforced; and (5) appreciate the inter-connectedness of international law, relations and diplomacy.
 
ContentThis unit covers the nature, structure, sources and subjects of public international law and its relationship with the municipal law; the law of treaties; state responsibility; jurisdiction (and immunity from jurisdiction); and the peaceful settlement of international disputes.
 
AssessmentThis comprises tutorial attendance and participation (10 per cent), tutorial exercises/activities (30 per cent) and a final examination (60 per cent).

Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course.
