| Outcomes: Students are able to (1) describe the subdivision process and relevant considerations by decision-makers; (2) describe the development process and relevant considerations by decision-makers; (3) understand how environmental issues are considered and assessed in the planning and development approval process; and (4) describe the process for obtaining compensation for the effect of a town planning scheme on the land. |

| Content: This unit covers the legal problems created by the existence of urban areas; cultural differences in urban form; models of legislation; analysis of local legislation including subdivision of land, zoning and town planning controls, density controls, development consent, appeals from planning authorities, and enforcement of planning. The approach of the unit is to relate the principles of the science of town planning to the development of the law relating to planning. |

Assessment: This comprises two compulsory short assignments (25 per cent each) and a final examination (50 per cent).
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
