| Outcomes: Students are able to (1) demonstrate an understanding of Commonwealth constitutional powers and restraints within the federal legal framework; (2) demonstrate the ability to characterise a Commonwealth law as part of the constitutional problem-solving method; (3) apply federal constitutional powers and limitations to address the constitutional validity of hypothetical pieces of legislation; and (4) effectively communicate an understanding of federal constitutional issues and arguments in both written and spoken form. |

| Content: This unit is a study of the Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia, focusing on the federal system. It contains a selection of topics which illustrate the principles governing the federal relations between the state and Commonwealth levels of government, the exercise of legislative, executive and judicial powers in the Federation and the impact of constitutional limitations. |

Assessment: Students are expected to attend tutorials, complete a tutorial assessment and sit a final examination.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
