Outcomes: Students are able to identify and consider a range of social issues and the law's response to them; and undertake in-depth research of one specific contemporary social issue and the manner in which law has addressed it.

Content: This unit focuses on the law's response to certain social issues and problems confronting disadvantaged sectors of Australian society. It examines from a variety of perspectives legal recognition, categorisation and accommodation of individual and group differences. Classes introduce and facilitate analysis and discussion of a wide range of related issues.

Assessment: This comprises (1) a written research paper or equivalent research undertaken as part of a placement within the University or government department or other legal or community organisation; (2) a work-in-progress oral presentation on the research; and (3) reflection papers on two of the topics addressed in class.
Supplementary assessment is not available in this unit except in the case of a bachelor's pass degree student who has obtained a mark of 45 to 49 and is currently enrolled in this unit, and it is the only remaining unit that the student must pass in order to complete their course. |
